I'm Lars — I'll Cycle You Through Amsterdam on the Routes Locals Actually Use
📍 Amsterdam, Netherlands
About This Experience
My name is Lars and I have been cycling in Amsterdam my whole life. The city centre on a tourist bike with 200 other tourists moving at 5km/h is not Amsterdam. I take small groups on classic Dutch bikes through the Jordaan, De Pijp and the Oud-West on routes that locals use — through the covered market at the Hallen, along the Prinsengracht away from the tour boats, into the Jordaan courtyard gardens (hofjes) that require knowing which door to open. We stop at two brown cafés for bitterballen and Dutch beer. We eat raw herring at a haringhandel on a canal corner. We end at a neighbourhood stroopwafel bakery. The cycling is easy and the distances are short. The conversation is good.

Born and raised in the Jordaan, the part of Amsterdam that was a working-class neighbourhood until about 2005 and is now full of galleries and expensive coffee — but still has the brown cafés (bruine kroegen) that have been there since before the artists arrived. I cycle everywhere and I have done since I was four. I know the cycling routes through the city that avoid the tourist bikes on the Damrak, which brown café does the best bitterballen, and why Dutch food is better than its international reputation suggests if you know where to find it.
