About This Experience
Tremé is the oldest African American neighbourhood in the United States. It is three blocks from the French Quarter and almost no tourists walk through it. I grew up here. I take groups through the neighbourhood with full historical context — the free people of colour who shaped this city's food, music and architecture before the Civil War, the Mardi Gras Indians who still sew their suits on this street, and why red beans on Monday is a cultural institution that connects every person in New Orleans to the washwomen who put the pot on before the laundry and let it cook all day. We eat at a local plate lunch spot that serves red beans and rice the way they've been served in this neighbourhood since before the Korean War, then at a Creole-run grocery in the Seventh Ward that makes the best cochon de lait po'boy in the city. This is a neighbourhood tour that happens to involve extraordinary food.

Third-generation Tremé. My grandmother cooked red beans and rice every Monday because that's what you did in this neighbourhood — you put the beans on while you washed clothes, and by evening the whole block could smell it. My grandfather played in a brass band and my mother still does second lines. We are not a museum exhibit. We are a neighbourhood that has existed since before the Louisiana Purchase and we have been feeding New Orleans for 300 years. Creole food — real Creole food, not the hotel version — is one of the most sophisticated regional cuisines in America and almost no visitor ever eats it.
