George Town Hawker Dawn — Char Kway Teow, Kopi and 6am Light
📍 Penang, Malaysia
About This Experience
The best hawker stalls in Penang start at 6am and sell out by 9am. This is not a tour you can sleep in for. I've spent 15 years as a food journalist documenting these stalls and the families who run them — many are third or fourth generation, working the same wok as their grandparents. We start at a kopitiam that has not updated its furniture or its kopi recipe since the 1960s, eat char kway teow at the stall that has been on the same corner since 1956, and end with prawn mee at a hawker who learned the recipe from his grandmother — who is still alive at 91 and stops in occasionally to check the broth. This is food as memory.
