About This Experience
My name is Claire and I live five minutes from Bondi Beach. The Sydney that visitors see is the Opera House and the touristy Bondi strip. The Sydney I live in is the coastal walking track between Bondi and Coogee — which is one of the greatest urban walks on earth — combined with the flat white culture that defines how this city actually starts its day. I take small groups along the cliff walk in the morning, stopping at three cafés that locals use rather than the obvious ones, explaining why Sydney coffee is specifically different and why you should care. We end at a fish and chip shop above the water at Coogee that has no website and a queue of regulars every day.

I grew up in Bondi, which now has more tourists than locals, and I have been eating my way through the Eastern Suburbs ever since I was old enough to walk to the beach alone. The Sydney food scene is world-class and almost entirely unrepresented in what visitors eat. The coffee culture is serious — the flat white was invented here, regardless of what Auckland says — and the café-to-beach ratio in the inner east is probably the highest on the planet. I also know the rock pool swims that the tourists never find, fifteen minutes from the Opera House.
