About This Experience

My name is Kevin and I grew up in Richmond, which is the reason to visit Vancouver if you care about food. Richmond is majority Chinese and it has the highest concentration of authentic Chinese regional cooking outside of China itself: Cantonese, Shanghainese, Sichuanese, Shanxi noodle spots, and the Taiwanese bubble tea that is not the chain bubble tea and is a completely different thing. I take groups to Richmond for morning dim sum at a restaurant that has been doing it properly since 1985, a walk through the Aberdeen Centre food court which is more interesting than most restaurant districts, and the Richmond Night Market if the timing is right — or the best alternative I know if it is not night market season. I explain why Vancouver's Chinese food culture is world-class and what makes it different from every other Chinese neighbourhood in the Western world.

I grew up in Richmond — the suburb of Vancouver that is majority Chinese and contains, without exaggeration, some of the best Chinese food in the world outside of China itself. The Richmond night market is the most extraordinary outdoor food event in North America. I know which dim sum restaurant in Richmond opens at 7am for the early shift workers, which Taiwanese hot pot place operates from a strip mall and has a two-hour queue, and why Vancouver's Chinese-Canadian food culture is completely distinct from anything you find in Chinese neighbourhoods in other Western cities. I also know the best salmon fish and chips on the sea wall and why Pacific salmon is different from Atlantic.
