I walk you through the preserved ochaya (teahouse) streets at the hour when the light is amber and the maiko are moving between engagements, and I explain what the geiko world actually is — its centuries-old structure, its economics, its relationship to Kyoto's cultural calendar. You will see these streets completely differently afterward.
