About This Experience

Kente is not souvenir fabric. It is a communication system. Each pattern has a name and a meaning, and the placement of colours conveys status, occasion and family lineage. I run weaving workshops in my studio where you sit at a traditional loom and make a small piece under instruction, then we go to Makola Market where I introduce you to the fabric traders who are my friends — and you understand what you're looking at because you've now made it yourself.

I'm a textile designer and cultural educator from Kumasi who relocated to Accra. I run workshops in traditional Kente weaving and take people through the local markets where nothing is staged. Ghana's craft culture is extraordinary and almost nobody who visits actually sees it. I want to change that.
