Tariq Al-Rashid

I grew up in Deira — the old part of Dubai, before the skyscrapers, when the city was still a trading port on a creek. My family has been in Dubai for four generations. The food culture of old Dubai is built around the spice souq, the fish market, and the Indian and Pakistani restaurants on Baniyas Road that have been feeding the city's working population since the 1960s. Most visitors to Dubai eat in mall food courts or hotel restaurants and never see the city. I take people to the Dubai that predates the Instagram era.
