I was born in Tepito and raised on tacos al pastor cut from the trompo. Mexico City has the most extraordinary street food culture on earth and I say that having eaten in Tokyo, Bangkok and Oaxaca. I know which taqueria in La Merced has been using the same marinade since 1962, which pozolería opens at 7am for the market workers, and which stall in the Mercado de la Merced sells the dried chillies that the best restaurant kitchens in the city buy from. Mexico City's food is one of the great world cuisines and the street version is where it actually lives.
