I grew up in the Plateau-Mont-Royal, the neighbourhood in Montréal where the bagel debate, the smoked meat debate, and the poutine debate are all taken very seriously. Montréal's food culture is its own thing — neither French nor American nor Canadian, but a specific Québécois synthesis that includes the smoked meat sandwich that is different from New York pastrami, the Montréal bagel that is different from a New York bagel, the poutine that has been debated for 60 years, and the Plateau café culture that keeps people in their seats for three hours in February.
