Little Havana Morning — Cuban Coffee, Calle Ocho and the Miami That Built Itself

Cuban-American, born in Little Havana. My family came from Havana in 1968 and my grandmother opened a ventanita (walk-up coffee window) on Calle Ocho that is still open today. Little Havana is one of the most culturally rich neighbourhoods in America and most people who visit Miami never leave South Beach. I take people to Calle Ocho for Cuban coffee, the walk-up window scene, a domino game with the old men in Máximo Gómez Park, and the family restaurants that have been serving Cuban and Nicaraguan food since before Miami became fashionable. The food is extraordinary. The stories are better.
