Dawn Paddleboard Through the Nosara Estuary — Mangroves, Macaws and Howler Monkeys
📍 Nosara, Costa Rica
About This Experience
The Nosara river estuary is a wildlife corridor between the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge and the Pacific coast. At dawn, before the wind arrives and before the tourist boats start their engines, it is one of the most tranquil places I know. I do SUP tours at 6:00am when the water is flat and the wildlife is at its most active: scarlet macaws flying from their roost trees, howler monkeys in the mangroves doing their morning announcement, great blue herons standing absolutely still in the shallows. The paddling is easy — the estuary is calm, shallow in most sections, and the route is 1.5 hours of paddling with stops. No experience required; I brief balance and paddle technique in 10 minutes and the rest comes naturally. We end on a sand beach at the river mouth where the estuary meets the Pacific. I bring fresh watermelon and coconut water. It is a legitimately extraordinary morning.

I have been surfing Playa Guiones since I was seven. My father put me on a foam board and pushed me into a wave and that was it. Nosara has become one of the most popular surf destinations in the world for women, and particularly for solo female travellers, for a specific reason: Playa Guiones has long, gentle, consistent waves that break over sand, not reef, and the water is warm. It is genuinely one of the best places on earth to learn. I run women-only sessions at 7am before the heat and before the crowds. I am not interested in getting beginners to stand up once and call it done. I want people to understand what waves are doing, how to read a break, and how to actually be in the ocean rather than just surviving it. I also do dawn paddleboard tours on the Nosara estuary before the wind arrives — the wildlife at that hour is extraordinary.
