About This Experience
Leimert Park is the cultural heart of Black Los Angeles — a neighbourhood that has produced musicians, activists, artists, and some of the most important soul food cooking in the American West. Most visitors to LA never leave the westside. I take people to Leimert Park on weekend mornings when the neighbourhood is fully alive: the jazz musicians who set up outside the World Stage, the Afrocentric bookstore that has been here since 1975, the Jamaican restaurant where the jerk chicken is made over proper wood coals, the Ethiopian spot that the Leimert Park community has been eating at for 30 years. This walk is as much about the community and its history as it is about the food — the Great Migration, the Watts uprising, the culture that came out of it. The food is extraordinary but it's inseparable from the story.
