About This Experience

My family has cooked nihari on the same corner of Gawalmandi for 60 years. My grandfather started the dhaba in 1963. My father kept it going through decades of change. I now cook alongside him every morning before I run tours. I open the kitchen to a maximum of 4 guests at a time — you sit on the wooden charpoy, watch how nihari is ladled, eat with the regulars who have been coming since before you were born, and I tell you the full history of this neighbourhood that was once the cultural heart of undivided Punjab. The food is included. The conversation is the real experience.

I was expecting to eat well. I was not expecting to feel like I'd genuinely been welcomed into someone's life. The food was extraordinary — the best I had on the whole trip. But it was the conversation around the table that I'll remember most. Three hours that felt like twenty minutes.

I searched for authentic local food experiences before this trip and found nothing that looked real. This was exactly what I was looking for. You can tell immediately that this is not a performance — this is how these people actually eat and live. The food was exceptional. Book it.

I have eaten in restaurants all week and nothing came close to this. Sitting at a real family table, eating food that took hours to prepare, learning the story behind every dish — this is what travel is supposed to feel like. Our host was warm, funny and extraordinarily knowledgeable. I have been recommending this to everyone I know who is going to this part of the world.

Guide replied: Thank you so much — this is exactly why I do this. Welcoming people into my home and my culture is one of the most meaningful things I do. Please come back.

Born and raised in the walled city of Lahore, three minutes walk from the Badshahi Mosque. My family has run a nihari dhaba on the same corner of Gawalmandi for 60 years. I know every street food cart from Data Darbar to Heera Mandi, which halwa puri stall opens at 5am, and where to find the best lassi in a city that takes lassi very seriously. Lahore is one of the greatest food cities on earth and almost nobody who visits eats the real thing.
