About This Experience

The Maybachufer Turkish market on the Landwehrkanal runs every Tuesday and Friday, but Saturday is when the Neukölln neighbourhood comes out to shop. This is not the Hackescher Markt tourist market — this is a 400-metre stretch of the canalside where vendors who have been here for 20 years sell vegetables, olives, pickles, bread, cheese, and doner kebab at prices that reflect what local people actually earn. I take small groups through the market on Saturday mornings, explaining what everything is, how to buy it, and what it's made of, followed by a canal-side breakfast from market produce. We eat: fresh simit (Turkish sesame bread), börek (pastry), white cheese with olives, and whatever fruit is in season. Then coffee from the Turkish café that's been on this corner since the 1970s.

I came back the next day to eat at the same place again. That tells you everything. The guide's knowledge was deep and completely unperformative — not a script, just someone who genuinely knows and loves where they live. The food was the best of the trip by a significant margin.

One of the best things I did on the entire trip. The food was extraordinary but what made it was the context — the personal stories, the neighbourhood knowledge, the sense that we were eating what the city actually eats rather than what it serves to visitors. I've done a lot of food experiences in a lot of cities. This was different.

Guide replied: Thank you so much — this is exactly why I do this. Please come back.

Worth every cent and then some. I travel specifically to understand places through their food, and this is the best example of that I've found. Real person, real neighbourhood, real meal. Nothing theatrical, nothing performed for tourists. Just very good food and very honest storytelling.

Berliner for life — grew up in Prenzlauer Berg before it became expensive, now in Neukölln. I work as a food writer and run a supper club in my apartment twice a month. Berlin is the most interesting food city in Europe right now and it has almost nothing to do with German food — it's about what happens when you put Turks, Vietnamese, Syrians, Poles, and Germans in the same neighbourhood for 30 years and they all start feeding each other. I run evening walks through Neukölln and Kreuzberg that show you this version of Berlin.
