About This Experience

Most visitors to Dubai eat in hotel restaurants or mall food courts and leave thinking they've tried Emirati food. They haven't. I take groups into Al Fahidi — the old wind-tower district — and through the spice and gold souks that my grandfather traded in, then across the Creek by abra to Deira's covered market. We eat the food that Emiratis eat when they're not performing for visitors: harees (slow-cooked wheat and meat porridge), balaleet (saffron vermicelli with eggs), machboos rice, and the lamb regag wrap from a stall that has been in Deira since before the oil boom. I show you what Dubai looked like before the towers, and why the people who built this city are proud of what came before them.

I searched for authentic local food experiences before this trip and found nothing that looked real. This was exactly what I was looking for. You can tell immediately that this is not a performance — this is how these people actually eat and live. The food was exceptional. Book it.

I have eaten in restaurants all week and nothing came close to this. Sitting at a real family table, eating food that took hours to prepare, learning the story behind every dish — this is what travel is supposed to feel like. Our host was warm, funny and extraordinarily knowledgeable. I have been recommending this to everyone I know who is going to this part of the world.
