I'm Celeste — I'll Introduce You to Gullah Geechee Food in Savannah's Hidden Neighbourhoods
📍 Savannah, United States
About This Experience
My name is Celeste. My family is Gullah Geechee, which is the African American culture of the Georgia Lowcountry — and one of the most important food traditions in American history. The dishes we cook — shrimp and grits, red rice, hoppin' John, Frogmore stew — are a direct line back to West Africa, preserved through 300 years of history in the coastal communities that most of America doesn't know exist. Savannah is a beautiful city and most visitors walk the squares and eat in the tourist restaurants near the riverfront. I take groups into the Eastside and Victorian District to eat Gullah Geechee food the way my family makes it: a home-cooked lunch at a community restaurant, a walk through the history of the neighbourhood, and an explanation of why this food matters and where it comes from.

I grew up in Savannah and my family is Gullah Geechee — the African American culture of the Georgia and South Carolina Lowcountry that has the oldest continuous food tradition in the American South. Shrimp and grits, Frogmore stew, red rice, hoppin' John — these are not just dishes, they are a direct culinary line to West Africa. Savannah is one of the most beautiful cities in America and its food culture is almost entirely invisible to the visitors who walk the squares. I take people to the tables that fed the real Savannah.
