I grew up in Savannah and my family is Gullah Geechee — the African American culture of the Georgia and South Carolina Lowcountry that has the oldest continuous food tradition in the American South. Shrimp and grits, Frogmore stew, red rice, hoppin' John — these are not just dishes, they are a direct culinary line to West Africa. Savannah is one of the most beautiful cities in America and its food culture is almost entirely invisible to the visitors who walk the squares. I take people to the tables that fed the real Savannah.
