I'm Brendan — I'll Take You to the Boston Seafood and North End Spots My Family Has Eaten at for 40 Years
📍 Boston, United States
About This Experience
My name is Brendan and my family has been in South Boston for three generations. Boston's food culture is built around the sea and the neighbourhood: the lobster roll is a specific thing and the best version is not served in the tourist restaurants, the clam chowder at the waterfront fish shacks is categorically different from the hotel version, and the North End — Boston's Italian neighbourhood — has bakeries and delis that have been operating since the 1940s. I take groups through the waterfront and into the North End across a morning: a waterfront fish shack for the lobster roll, a clam chowder tasting, and a North End cannoli and espresso at a bakery that has been making the same recipe since 1946. I explain Boston's neighbourhood history and why this city's food is significantly better than its reputation.

Third-generation South Boston Irish-American. My family has been in this city since 1947 and I grew up eating chowder, lobster rolls, and Italian sub sandwiches from the North End delis. Boston's food scene splits into two worlds: the tourist version on Quincy Market and the real version in the neighbourhoods. I know the clam chowder served in a bread bowl at the waterfront fish shacks that the fishermen use, the North End bakeries that have been making cannoli since the 1940s, and the dive bar that does the best lobster roll in the city from a kitchen the size of a closet.
