Sultanahmet at Dawn — Walking Meditation Through 1,500 Years of Istanbul
📍 Istanbul, Turkey
About This Experience
Sultanahmet between 6:30am and 9am is a different city from the one that appears in every photograph. The tour buses have not arrived. The carpet sellers are not yet outside. The Hagia Sophia's morning light — which has been falling through the same windows for 1,500 years — is yours to stand in without 2,000 other people. I take small groups of women through a slow, meditative walk that begins at the Blue Mosque courtyard before the first tourist prayer entry, continues through the Hippodrome (the Roman chariot racing track that is now a public square, with obelisks that are older than Istanbul itself), and into the gardens between Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace that no one seems to stop in. We sit at a neighbourhood tea garden — not a tourist café — for a Turkish breakfast: white cheese, olives, tomato, honey, kaymak clotted cream, simit and tea. I explain the layers of this city's history not as a textbook but as a story of women who lived here across 15 centuries.

My mother was a natır — a female hammam attendant — at Çemberlitaş for 22 years. I grew up sitting in the steam room after closing watching her work. The Turkish hammam ritual is one of the oldest wellness practices in the world and almost none of what is sold to visitors as a hammam experience has anything to do with the real thing. The tourist hammams give you 15 minutes on a marble slab and call it done. The ritual my mother taught me takes 90 minutes, begins with resting in the heat until your pores open, involves proper kese exfoliation with a mitt that removes a week of dead skin, and ends with a marble floor sleep that is genuinely different from anything you can buy in a spa. I also take women through Sultanahmet before the crowds arrive at dawn — a meditative walk through 1,500 years of history while the city is still quiet.
