About This Experience

Çemberlitaş Hamam was built in 1584 by the architect Mimar Sinan — the same man who built the Süleymaniye Mosque — and the women's section has been running without interruption for 440 years. The tourist hammam experience sold everywhere in Istanbul involves being rushed through on a conveyor belt of 15-minute treatments. This is not that. I book the women's section for a private or semi-private session and guide you through the actual ritual: 20 minutes resting on the heated göbek taşı marble platform as your pores open, then proper kese exfoliation — a kese mitt removes the outer layer of dead skin that no shower touches, and after your first proper kese you understand immediately why Ottomans went to the hammam weekly — followed by a full foam massage and a slow cool-down on the cool marble benches. We finish with tea and lokum in the changing room (camekân), which is a Baroque-domed wooden interior that predates the American Revolution. I explain the social history of the hammam as a female-only space throughout Ottoman society — it was the one place women had entirely to themselves.

My mother was a natır — a female hammam attendant — at Çemberlitaş for 22 years. I grew up sitting in the steam room after closing watching her work. The Turkish hammam ritual is one of the oldest wellness practices in the world and almost none of what is sold to visitors as a hammam experience has anything to do with the real thing. The tourist hammams give you 15 minutes on a marble slab and call it done. The ritual my mother taught me takes 90 minutes, begins with resting in the heat until your pores open, involves proper kese exfoliation with a mitt that removes a week of dead skin, and ends with a marble floor sleep that is genuinely different from anything you can buy in a spa. I also take women through Sultanahmet before the crowds arrive at dawn — a meditative walk through 1,500 years of history while the city is still quiet.
