About This Experience

This walk covers three very different parts of Seoul's food culture in one afternoon and evening. We start at Noryangjin Wholesale Fish Market — the largest fish market in Korea — where I show you how to pick fresh seafood and have it prepared immediately upstairs. Then we walk through Dongbinggo, a quiet residential neighbourhood that almost no visitor ever reaches, to a pojangmacha (street tent) run by a woman who has been serving ojingeo-bokkeum and makgeolli (rice wine) from the same spot for 22 years. We finish at the Han River at dusk with Korean fried chicken and beer — which is not a tourist cliché but the way Seoulites actually spend summer evenings. Everything we eat is what locals eat.

I came back the next day to eat at the same place again. That tells you everything. The guide's knowledge was deep and completely unperformative — not a script, just someone who genuinely knows and loves where they live. The food was the best of the trip by a significant margin.

Worth every cent and then some. I travel specifically to understand places through their food, and this is the best example of that I've found. Real person, real neighbourhood, real meal. Nothing theatrical, nothing performed for tourists. Just very good food and very honest storytelling.

One of the best things I did on the entire trip. The food was extraordinary but what made it was the context — the personal stories, the neighbourhood knowledge, the sense that we were eating what the city actually eats rather than what it serves to visitors. I've done a lot of food experiences in a lot of cities. This was different.

Guide replied: Thank you so much — this is exactly why I do this. Please come back.

Born in Jongno-gu, five minutes walk from Gyeongbokgung. My grandmother ran a gimbap place in Gwangjang Market for 40 years — I grew up eating sundae and mung bean pancakes before school. I teach Korean at a university now, which means I know how to explain things to people who are completely new to the culture. Seoul's food scene is one of the most exciting in Asia and almost nobody who visits eats at the places locals actually go.
