About This Experience
My name is Valentina and I grew up in Medellín. The city has changed dramatically in the last 15 years and is now one of the great destinations in Latin America — but most visitors experience the Instagram version: the outdoor escalators, the coffee shops in El Poblado, the rooftop bars. The food story is deeper. I take groups to the Laureles neighbourhood for a proper bandeja paisa — the enormous Antioquian feast that is what this region actually eats — and into the mercado for an explanation of Colombian produce: the tropical fruits you have never seen, the fresh cheese, the maize preparations that are the base of everything. We end at a specialty café in El Poblado where I explain why Colombian coffee is what it is and why the cup in front of you was probably grown within 100km of where we are sitting.

Medellín's food culture is built around bandeja paisa — the enormous Antioquian platter of beans, rice, chicharrón, chorizo, fried egg and avocado that is the emblematic dish of this region — and the mercados and tiendas of the Laureles and Envigado neighbourhoods where locals buy their food. The city's café culture is extraordinary: this is the region that produces some of Colombia's best coffee and the specialty café scene in El Poblado is world-class.
