Medellín Neighbourhood Walk — Laureles, the Real Food Spots and the Transformation Story

Most visitors to Medellín go to the cable car, take photographs of the escalators in the comunas, and eat in the tourist restaurants of El Poblado. Laureles — where I live — is where the middle-class Medellín actually goes out to eat, and it is a completely different city. I take groups through the neighbourhood, to the fritanga stalls on the corner of Stadium that stay open until 4am, to a pandebono bakery that makes cheese bread the way my grandmother made it, to a fresh juice bar that blends combinations you won't find outside Colombia. Along the way I explain the transformation story honestly — what Medellín was in the 1980s and 1990s, how the urbanism and community investment actually happened, and what the ongoing contradictions are. This is not a dark tourism pitch and it is not a triumph narrative. It is a complicated story told by someone who was here for it.
