Tagine Dinner with My Family in the Medina
📍 Marrakech, Morocco
About This Experience
This is not a cooking class. It is an invitation into my home. We start at 4pm in the spice souks — I show you how to select ras el hanout properly and which spice merchants my family has used for three generations. Back in my kitchen, you help me prepare a slow lamb tagine with preserved lemon and olives the way my grandmother taught me, along with a proper Moroccan salad spread and msemen flatbread. We eat together around the family table with my husband and whoever from the family happens to be there that evening. Mint tea is made fresh throughout. The evening ends around 9pm with pastilla pastries and conversation. My house is in the medina, ten minutes from Djemaa el-Fna — but nobody in my neighbourhood is running tours.

I have eaten in restaurants all week and nothing came close to this. Sitting at a real family table, eating food that took hours to prepare, learning the story behind every dish — this is what travel is supposed to feel like. Our host was warm, funny and extraordinarily knowledgeable. I have been recommending this to everyone I know who is going to this part of the world.

I searched for authentic local food experiences before this trip and found nothing that looked real. This was exactly what I was looking for. You can tell immediately that this is not a performance — this is how these people actually eat and live. The food was exceptional. Book it.

I was expecting to eat well. I was not expecting to feel like I'd genuinely been welcomed into someone's life. The food was extraordinary — the best I had on the whole trip. But it was the conversation around the table that I'll remember most. Three hours that felt like twenty minutes.
Meet Your Guide & Host
I grew up in my grandmother's kitchen in the medina. She taught me that a proper Moroccan tagine takes three hours minimum and that every spice in the souks has a story. I open my family home to guests who want to cook and eat with us — not a demonstration, a real meal around a real table. My husband makes the mint tea. My daughter usually steals the best pieces of lamb.
