About This Experience
La Latina is the oldest part of Madrid that still operates as a neighbourhood rather than a theme park. The streets that run between Plaza de la Cebada and Plaza de la Paja have been full of tabernas, bodegas, and casas de comidas since before the Spanish Civil War — some of them since before the First World War. I grew up here and worked the bar at a taberna that has been open since 1860. I take small groups through La Latina on Saturday mornings — the traditional vermouth hour — and into the bars that have been feeding madrileños (not tourists) for half a century. We eat: croquetas de jamón, tortilla española (from the bar that was recently on every food list in Spain and is genuinely that good), oreja a la plancha, and whatever is in season at Mercado de la Cebada. The wine is house wine and it costs what house wine should cost.

Worth every cent and then some. I travel specifically to understand places through their food, and this is the best example of that I've found. Real person, real neighbourhood, real meal. Nothing theatrical, nothing performed for tourists. Just very good food and very honest storytelling.
