Neukölln is where Berlin happens right now. It's where you find the Turkish bakkal that's been run by the same family since 1982 next to a natural wine bar that opened three months ago. Where a Vietnamese grandmother sells bún bò Huế from a hatch in a wall and the Syrian restaurant next door has a three-hour queue on weekends. Where the Korean fried chicken place is run by a Berliner who spent five years in Seoul and the döner shop is still the original version, not the tourist one. I've lived in Neukölln for eight years and I run supper clubs in my apartment. I take small evening groups through the neighbourhood eating at the places that make Berlin's food scene what it is — genuinely multicultural, genuinely cheap, genuinely good. No tourist food. No Mitte. Just the neighbourhood.

Worth every cent and then some. I travel specifically to understand places through their food, and this is the best example of that I've found. Real person, real neighbourhood, real meal. Nothing theatrical, nothing performed for tourists. Just very good food and very honest storytelling.

One of the best things I did on the entire trip. The food was extraordinary but what made it was the context — the personal stories, the neighbourhood knowledge, the sense that we were eating what the city actually eats rather than what it serves to visitors. I've done a lot of food experiences in a lot of cities. This was different.
