Seoul Night Food Walk — Pojangmacha, Fried Chicken and the City After Dark
📍 Seoul, South Korea
About This Experience
Seoul after dark is a completely different city, and its food culture only fully reveals itself at night. I run evening walks through Hongdae and the streets behind Dongdaemun that hit the pojangmacha stalls, the 24-hour dosirak (lunchbox) shops, the tteokbokki cart that's been in the same spot for 30 years, and the fried chicken place that doesn't appear on any food app but that every Korean in this neighbourhood knows. I spent eight years cooking in Korean restaurant kitchens — including three in a Michelin-starred restaurant — and I left because I wanted to share food that's actually eaten, not food that's performed for guests. This walk is what I eat when I'm off duty.

One of the best things I did on the entire trip. The food was extraordinary but what made it was the context — the personal stories, the neighbourhood knowledge, the sense that we were eating what the city actually eats rather than what it serves to visitors. I've done a lot of food experiences in a lot of cities. This was different.

I came back the next day to eat at the same place again. That tells you everything. The guide's knowledge was deep and completely unperformative — not a script, just someone who genuinely knows and loves where they live. The food was the best of the trip by a significant margin.

Worth every cent and then some. I travel specifically to understand places through their food, and this is the best example of that I've found. Real person, real neighbourhood, real meal. Nothing theatrical, nothing performed for tourists. Just very good food and very honest storytelling.
Meet Your Guide & Host
Chef turned guide. I spent eight years in Korean restaurant kitchens — including three in a Michelin-starred hanshik restaurant in Gangnam — before I decided I'd rather share food than cook it anonymously. I run night food walks through Dongdaemun and Hongdae that hit the pojangmacha stalls, the 24-hour dosirak spots, and the fried chicken places that don't have English menus. I also do daytime market sessions in Noryangjin, the wholesale fish market, if you want to understand Korean seafood.
