About This Experience
My name is Mariana and I grew up in Mouraria. Lisbon is one of the fastest-changing cities in Europe and the neighbourhood where fado was born is changing with it — but the tascas, the pensions, and the Saturday market are still there and they are still extraordinary. A tasca is a small neighbourhood restaurant with no menu — the cook makes what she decided to make that day, it is written on a board, and it costs six euros. I take groups through Mouraria and the Intendente square across a morning: a pastelaria for the best pastéis de nata I know at 9am when they come out of the oven, the Saturday market, a sit-down lunch at a tasca where the cook has been making caldo verde, bacalhau, and arroz de pato since 1989, and a walk through the neighbourhood history that most visitors who go to Alfama never discover.
