The Tenderloin has a reputation that keeps tourists away. That reputation is also why it has some of the best and most affordable food in San Francisco — the Vietnamese, Burmese, Ethiopian, and Salvadoran restaurants that have been here for 20 and 30 years haven't been priced out yet. I've lived in the Tenderloin for 15 years. I know every pho shop, every bánh mì counter, and every family restaurant in a 10-block radius. The pho here is the real thing — made by Vietnamese families from the Central Highlands and the Mekong Delta, with broths that take 12 hours and cost a fraction of what you'll pay in the Mission. The Burmese restaurant on Larkin has been feeding the neighbourhood for 25 years and makes mohinga (fish noodle soup) that you cannot find better outside Rangoon. I take small groups through the Tenderloin with full context — the neighbourhood's history, its community, and why this is where San Francisco's most authentic food culture lives.
