I'm Rosa — I'll Take You Through the Mission District to Eat the San Francisco Nobody Visits

My name is Rosa and I grew up in the Mission. San Francisco's food scene is world-famous but almost nobody eats the right version of it. The Mission District has taquerias that serve the San Francisco-style burrito — which is a specific, distinct thing from a Mexican burrito — Salvadoran pupuserias, Oaxacan restaurants, and corner panaderías that have been baking pan dulce since before I was born. I take groups through the Mission across a morning: a taqueria, a pupusería, a panadería for pan dulce and Mexican hot chocolate, and the mural-covered streets that tell the neighbourhood's history. I explain why the San Francisco burrito is its own food category and why the Mission matters as a community beyond its food.
