I'm Fernanda — I'll Take You to Santa Teresa's Botecos and the Rio That Doesn't Face the Beach
📍 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
About This Experience
My name is Fernanda and I grew up in Santa Teresa, which is the neighbourhood in Rio built on a hill above the city where the artists and bohemians have lived since the 1920s. Rio's best food is not in the beachfront restaurants. It is in the botecos — the neighbourhood bars that serve cold chopp (draft beer), grilled chicken hearts on a skewer, and bolinho de bacalhau that arrives hot from the fryer — and in the Saturday feira markets where the city buys its produce. I take groups through Santa Teresa across an afternoon: a boteco crawl with three stops, a ride on the historic Santa Teresa tram, and a viewpoint above the city where you can see the layout of Rio and understand why the city is shaped the way it is. We eat the whole way.

I grew up in Santa Teresa, the hillside neighbourhood in Rio that artists and musicians have lived in for 100 years, before it became fashionable again. My mother ran a small bar that served caipirinhas and petiscos (bar snacks) until late every night. Rio's food culture lives in the boteco bars — the neighbourhood bars that serve cold beer, grilled chicken hearts, and bolinho de bacalhau (salt cod fritters) — and in the feira street markets that set up every weekend in every neighbourhood. The version sold near Copacabana is a performance. The real city eats elsewhere.
