Walled City Food Walk — Badshahi Mosque to Gawalmandi at Dawn
📍 Lahore, Pakistan
About This Experience
Lahore's walled city is 3,000 years old and it feeds itself before the sun is up. I take you through it starting at 5:30am: nihari slow-cooked overnight beef broth ladled onto naan, halwa puri with chana masala at a stall that has been on the same corner since 1947, and the paye (trotters) that my uncle has made every morning for 35 years. We walk past the Badshahi Mosque as the first azaan echoes across the walls, through the Wazir Khan mosque courtyard where the tile work alone is worth the trip, and into the food lanes of the old city that no travel guide lists. This is Lahore the way Lahore actually eats. It is loud, it is abundant, and the food is extraordinary.

I searched for authentic local food experiences before this trip and found nothing that looked real. This was exactly what I was looking for. You can tell immediately that this is not a performance — this is how these people actually eat and live. The food was exceptional. Book it.

I was expecting to eat well. I was not expecting to feel like I'd genuinely been welcomed into someone's life. The food was extraordinary — the best I had on the whole trip. But it was the conversation around the table that I'll remember most. Three hours that felt like twenty minutes.

I have eaten in restaurants all week and nothing came close to this. Sitting at a real family table, eating food that took hours to prepare, learning the story behind every dish — this is what travel is supposed to feel like. Our host was warm, funny and extraordinarily knowledgeable. I have been recommending this to everyone I know who is going to this part of the world.

Born and raised in the walled city of Lahore, three minutes walk from the Badshahi Mosque. My family has run a nihari dhaba on the same corner of Gawalmandi for 60 years. I know every street food cart from Data Darbar to Heera Mandi, which halwa puri stall opens at 5am, and where to find the best lassi in a city that takes lassi very seriously. Lahore is one of the greatest food cities on earth and almost nobody who visits eats the real thing.
