About This Experience
Boyle Heights is the Mexican-American neighbourhood that built Los Angeles — and it has the best Mexican food in a city with the best Mexican food outside Mexico. Most visitors to LA eat tacos in Silver Lake or WeHo and wonder why they're not better. The reason is that the best tacos are in Boyle Heights, on César Chávez Avenue and the streets around Mariachi Plaza, at the truck that's been parked in the same spot since 1987, at the family-run taqueria that makes its own tortillas and has never needed a Yelp listing. I grew up here and spent 10 years writing about this neighbourhood's food. I take small groups for a morning walk — the best time, when the trompo (al pastor spit) is freshest and the tortillas are made to order — through four or five stops that represent the full range of what Mexican food actually looks like: tacos, tamales from the cart at the corner, birria with consommé, and agua fresca that bears no resemblance to the bottled version.
