About This Experience

My grandfather was a pearl diver. His photographs are in the Dubai Museum. Before the oil was found, this coast lived and died by the pearl trade — and the food reflected it: simple, preserved, spiced to last long sea voyages. I invite guests into my family home in Al Shindagha for a dinner that follows the old Emirati meal structure: dates and qahwa (cardamom coffee) to receive guests, a shared spread of traditional dishes, and stories about what this city was before 1966. My mother cooks. The food includes harees, balaleet, and lamb ouzi over rice. We eat on floor cushions as my family did before furniture arrived with the oil money.

I searched for authentic local food experiences before this trip and found nothing that looked real. This was exactly what I was looking for. You can tell immediately that this is not a performance — this is how these people actually eat and live. The food was exceptional. Book it.

I have eaten in restaurants all week and nothing came close to this. Sitting at a real family table, eating food that took hours to prepare, learning the story behind every dish — this is what travel is supposed to feel like. Our host was warm, funny and extraordinarily knowledgeable. I have been recommending this to everyone I know who is going to this part of the world.
