South Side Chicago, born and raised. My family has lived in Bronzeville for four generations — my great-grandmother ran a boarding house during the Great Migration, my grandfather had a blues bar, my father ran a soul food counter for 30 years. I know Chicago's Black food culture the way most guides know the River North bar scene. I take people to the South Side to eat Polish sausage at Maxwell Street Market, rib tips at the spots that have been smoking since the 1960s, and aquarium-style fried shrimp at the takeout counter my family has been going to since before I was born. Chicago is one of the greatest food cities in America and 90% of tourists eat none of it.
